Mansfield Bathroom Renovation: From Cramped to Spacious

Hunter Bathrooms Brisbane recently completed a stunning transformation of a compact bathroom in Mansfield, proving that even the smallest spaces can be turned into functional, stylish sanctuaries. This project required careful planning and expert execution to maximise space whilst maintaining the home’s character.

The Challenge

This heritage-style home presented unique challenges typical of older Brisbane properties. The highset brick and weatherboard construction required special consideration, particularly when asbestos was discovered during the initial inspection. What began as a modest renovation quickly became a complete gut-and-rebuild project, but the end results speak for themselves.

Before

Asbestos Remediation and Safety

Safety was our top priority throughout this renovation. Professional asbestos removal was conducted before any renovation work could commence, ensuring the family’s wellbeing and compliance with all Australian safety standards. This necessary step, whilst adding to the project timeline, provided peace of mind and a safe foundation for the beautiful renovation that followed.

Layout Transformation

The original bathroom featured a cramped layout with a built-in bath and separate shower cubicle divided by a wall. Our design team recognised the potential to create a more open, functional space by removing the dividing wall between the shower and bath areas. This single change dramatically improved the room’s flow and visual appeal.

The installation of a stylish corner bath not only saved valuable floor space but also created a luxurious focal point. Meanwhile, the new semi-frameless shower provides a clean, modern aesthetic that makes the compact bathroom feel significantly larger.

Thoughtful Storage Solutions

Storage is crucial in any bathroom, but particularly important in smaller spaces. We incorporated two custom shower niches – one positioned conveniently in the shower area and another near the corner bath. These built-in storage solutions eliminate the need for bulky caddies whilst maintaining clean lines throughout the space.

The vanity selection was particularly important for this compact bathroom. We chose an ADP vanity in elegant oak with a moulded glacier white top, providing both style and functionality. The warm timber tones add natural character whilst the clean white surface offers practical benefits for daily use.

Mirror Cabinet Innovation

The original mirror cabinet protruded awkwardly from the wall, consuming precious space in the compact room. Our solution was a semi-recessed mirror cabinet with integrated shelf storage, also finished in elegant oak to match the vanity. This streamlined approach provides ample storage whilst creating a cohesive, uncluttered appearance.

Separate Toilet Upgrade

The separate toilet received a complete makeover with a new rimless toilet suite for improved hygiene and easier cleaning. We continued the bathroom’s tile design halfway up the walls, creating visual continuity between the spaces whilst defining each area’s function.

Material and Finish Selection

The material palette was carefully chosen to maximise light and create visual cohesion throughout the space. Terrazzo Bianco Light tiles were selected for both floors and walls, providing a timeless foundation that reflects light beautifully.

To prevent monotony and add visual interest, we incorporated stack bond clay light grey matt tiles (65x265mm) as a feature on the upper portions of the walls. This subtle contrast breaks up the terrazzo whilst maintaining the room’s sophisticated aesthetic.

All hardware was finished in brushed nickel, providing a contemporary touch that complements both the timber vanity and the neutral tile palette. This consistent finish selection ensures every element works harmoniously together.

The Result

This Mansfield bathroom renovation demonstrates that thoughtful design and quality execution can transform even the most challenging spaces. By removing barriers, maximising storage, and selecting appropriate materials, we’ve created a bathroom that feels spacious, functional, and thoroughly modern whilst respecting the home’s heritage character.

The combination of the elegant oak vanity, terrazzo tiles, and carefully planned layout proves that small bathrooms can deliver big impact when approached with creativity and expertise.
