Project Overview
Hunter Bathrooms Brisbane recently completed a stunning bathroom renovation for a cherished early 1900s Queenslander in Toowong. The owners, who are original to the area, have lovingly maintained their home’s authentic character whilst recognising the need for modern functionality as they age gracefully in place.
The Challenge
This beautiful heritage home presented unique challenges that required thoughtful solutions. The property featured only one bathroom, with the washing machine inconveniently located on the lower level. As the owners found navigating stairs increasingly difficult, they needed to bring laundry facilities upstairs whilst creating a more accessible bathroom space.
The existing bathroom layout, whilst charming, was no longer practical. The owners required removal of the bathtub in favour of a walk-in shower with mobility features, all whilst preserving the home’s classical heritage character.

The Solution
Structural Modifications
Our team created an entirely new space by constructing additional walls, carefully matching the style and colour palette to the original house. The expansion allowed for both bathroom and laundry facilities on the upper level, eliminating the need for daily stair navigation.
Laundry Integration
A compact laundry area was thoughtfully designed to accommodate the washing machine alongside floating shelving for storage of laundry essentials. The original double timber louvre French doors were relocated to enclose the laundry entrance, maintaining the home’s authentic character whilst creating a functional separation between spaces. An open doorway connects the bathroom and laundry areas for seamless flow.
Accessibility Features
Understanding the owners’ mobility requirements, we removed the existing bathtub and installed a spacious walk-in shower. Specialised grab rails were strategically positioned throughout the shower space to provide essential support and stability. A purpose-built bench seat enables comfortable seated showering when needed.
Design Elements
Wall Treatments
The renovation showcases beautiful Carrara Gloss 300×600 porcelain tiles with a sophisticated marble appearance on the walls. Above shower height, traditional VJ (vertical joint) panelling maintains the home’s period character whilst providing practical water resistance.
Heritage Details
Honouring the owners’ desire for vintage aesthetics, a striking black mosaic border frames the room’s perimeter. This classic detail perfectly complements the heritage style whilst adding visual interest and definition to the space.
Fixtures and Fittings
Brushed gold tapware, grab rails, and shower systems add an opulent touch that elevates the space beyond purely functional renovation. The warm metallic finish creates a luxurious feel whilst maintaining the classic aesthetic.
Vanity Area
A custom nook houses the vanity, featuring VJ panelling that harmonises with the bathroom’s design language. Easy-to-use brushed gold handles ensure accessibility, whilst the vanity supports a generous above-counter bowl. The low-profile basin features an elegant fluted edge that echoes the VJ detailing throughout the space.
Modern Conveniences
A new rimless toilet was installed for effortless cleaning and maintenance, ensuring the space remains hygienic and easy to manage for years to come.
The Result

This thoughtful renovation successfully bridges heritage charm with modern functionality. The owners now enjoy an accessible, beautiful bathroom that honours their home’s classical features whilst providing the practical solutions they need. The space is designed for easy maintenance and long-term enjoyment, proving that accessibility and style can work in perfect harmony.
The project demonstrates Hunter Bathrooms Brisbane’s expertise in heritage renovations, showcasing our ability to preserve character whilst incorporating essential modern amenities. This Toowong transformation will serve the owners well for many years to come, combining safety, functionality, and timeless elegance.
