Looking for inspiration for an accessible bathroom renovation in Brisbane? This recent Hunter Bathrooms Brisbane project in Norman Park transformed the only bathroom in an older worker’s cottage into a safer, more spacious and easier-to-use room for a client with mobility needs.
The original bathroom needed more space, better access and a layout that would support everyday independence. By removing built-in cupboards, changing the entry door, relocating the toilet and creating a generous walk-in shower, Hunter Bathrooms delivered a practical renovation that still feels fresh, calm and timeless.
The Challenge: Making the Only Bathroom Safer and More Accessible
This Norman Park home had one bathroom, so the renovation needed to do more than simply update the finishes. The room had to become easier to move through, safer to use and better suited to the client’s mobility requirements.
Two existing cupboards were taking up valuable floor space and making the room feel tighter than it needed to be. The swing door also affected access into the bathroom, while the previous layout did not provide the open shower space, support rails or clear movement area required for a more accessible bathroom design.

The Solution: More Space, Better Access and a Walk-In Shower
The renovation focused on practical accessibility improvements first. The two cupboards were removed to make the room larger, creating more usable space and improving movement through the bathroom.
The entry was also upgraded by replacing the swing door with a barn door, helping make access into the bathroom easier and reducing the amount of clearance needed around the doorway. A new double-hung window was installed to refresh the room and improve the overall finish.
Inside the bathroom, the toilet was repositioned to another wall to improve the layout. The shower was redesigned as a walk-in space with no door, using a shower panel to keep the room open and easy to access.
Accessible Bathroom Features
Several important accessibility features were included to make the finished bathroom safer and more practical for the client’s daily needs:
- Walk-in shower with no door for easier access and less obstruction.
- Large built-in shower seat running the entire width of the end of the shower.
- Full-length shower shelf along the back wall for convenient storage.
- Multiple hand rails positioned around the room to support client safety.
- Relocated toilet to make the layout more functional.
- Barn door entry to improve access and reduce door-swing issues.
Finishes and Materials
Although accessibility was the priority, the final bathroom still needed to feel warm, modern and visually simple. Hunter Bathrooms used a restrained palette of neutral tiles, brushed nickel fixtures and clean white cabinetry to create a finish that will age well.
- Floor and shower seat tiles: 600×600 Khaki tiles.
- Wall tiles: 600×600 Tundra Ivory matt tiles, installed floor to ceiling.
- Tapware: Brushed nickel fittings for a soft, timeless finish.
- Vanity: Glacier all-white floor-mounted vanity with moulded sink.
- Storage: Large vanity storage plus a double-door mirror cabinet.
- Hardware: Brushed nickel drawer and door pulls added to the vanity.
The Result: A Fresh, Functional Bathroom Built Around the Client
The finished Norman Park bathroom is brighter, more spacious and much easier to use. The walk-in shower, wide shower seat, carefully positioned hand rails and improved room layout all support the client’s mobility needs while keeping the space comfortable and attractive.
The simple colour palette also gives the bathroom a timeless feel. The Khaki floor and seat tiles, Tundra Ivory wall tiles and brushed nickel finishes create a clean look that feels fresh now and should stay current for years.
