Dream Bathroom Realised: A West End Renovation Story
After more than 30 years in her beloved West End home, our client had never experienced the luxury of a brand-new bathroom. She had always harboured a vision of a pink-tiled sanctuary, and when she finally decided to make this dream a reality, she knew exactly who to call.
The Challenge
The existing bathroom presented several challenges that needed careful consideration. The shower over the bath arrangement posed a significant safety concern as our client aged, with stepping into the bath creating an unnecessary falls risk. The room’s functionality needed improvement, and her long-held vision of pink and black tiles with a diamond floor pattern required expert execution.
The Solution
Our design team worked closely with the homeowner to create a bathroom that balanced her aesthetic dreams with practical safety considerations. The centrepiece of the renovation was the installation of a walk-in shower for easy access, completely eliminating the need to step over a bath edge. To future-proof the space, we incorporated handrails within the shower area, ensuring safety without compromising the room’s elegant design.
Design Details
The colour scheme brought our client’s vision to life with stunning Agadir Pink Subway tiles (70x280mm) creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. The pink tiles were beautifully contrasted with a thoughtful design detail of two black strip tiles that elegantly broke up the pink expanse.
The flooring showcased exquisite tiling work featuring a diamond pattern using white and black 200x200mm tiles, with black tile edging that perfectly framed the space. This intricate floor design added visual interest whilst maintaining the room’s sophisticated aesthetic.
Preserving Character
Understanding the importance of maintaining the home’s original character, we made several thoughtful preservation choices. The VJ sheeting above head height was retained, as the impressive 3.0-metre ceiling height made floor-to-ceiling tiles impractical. The original light switches and powerpoints were kept to maintain authenticity, whilst the grill from the old window was removed to create a cleaner look.
Functional Improvements
To improve access and flow, we relocated the door opening from the right to the left side of the room, though the original door was retained. A beautiful antique-style chandelier replaced the old lighting, creating a focal point that complemented the room’s vintage charm.
Premium Fixtures and Fittings
The renovation featured carefully selected fixtures that enhanced both functionality and style. The toilet and pedestal, called Washington, were chosen for their old-fashioned appearance that perfectly suited the room’s character. The Bordeaux Shower Column set and matching basin mixer, complete with ceramic handles, added authentic vintage touches throughout the space.
A stunning art deco mirror from Manhattan Mirrors in Melbourne became a feature piece, incorporating three glass shelves for practical storage. The shower included a built-in shelf for toiletries, whilst shower rails and robe hooks were selected in a style that harmonised with the room’s classic aesthetic.
The Result
The transformation exceeded all expectations, creating a bathroom that seamlessly blended safety, functionality, and style. Our client’s 30-year wait was rewarded with a space that not only fulfilled her pink tile dreams but provided a safe, accessible environment for years to come.
The combination of the walk-in shower, thoughtful safety features, exquisite tiling work, and carefully chosen vintage-inspired fixtures created a bathroom that feels both timeless and thoroughly modern in its functionality.
